About the Diocese
The Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio comprises 71 congregations spanning the southern portion of the state, rich in geographical distinctions that translate into diverse congregations and communities. The diocese also takes pride in a variety of important ministries and missions like the Procter Center, Becoming Beloved Community initiatives, Episcopal Community Ministries, the Commission for Creation Care and Environmental Justice, and other formation ministries. In the fall of 2023 the diocese elected its 10th bishop, The Rev. Canon Kristin Uffelman White, who will be ordained as bishop in February 2024.
The Ideal Candidate
The goal of this work is to build up the Body of Christ that is the Church, through a coherent narrative of stories shared from the congregations and communities of the Diocese of Southern Ohio. This role requires expertise in branding and communications management. The director of communications works closely with diocesan staff and is able to recognize when seeking counsel from other experts would be beneficial. Additionally, the ability to collaborate with talented external agencies will be necessary for specific projects, from time to time.
Key Responsibilities
Diocesan Vision Casting
- In consultation with the diocesan visioning, create a strategic communications plan that directly supports the stated needs of the diocese, both from within the office and from outside of it.
- Build a systematic structure to implement each aspect of the strategic communications plan, collaborating with the communications team, other diocesan staff, and congregational leaders.
- Resource the bishop in communications about contemporary needs and issues, both within and beyond the Church.
Managing Implementation
- Create a process for identifying and telling the stories of the parishes and their people, recognizing the importance of good storytelling that returns to help discern diocesan mission and narrative.
- Prepare for and engage in crisis communications, as needed.
- Oversee the implementation of a social media strategy, created as part of the larger communications plan.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Experience in Episcopal church and/or diocesan communications work
- Proven ability to think strategically about culture and systems
- Crisis communications experience
